    the waiting game

I’m sitting in the Graduate Admissions office at another university (don’t worry, this university and Lake Forest College do NOT compete with each other, so there is no real conflict of interest).  I’m trying to troubleshoot an error in a batch process file that runs daily – importing data from one database to another.  As it is running I have to “tick” each process as it completes so that I’ll know what part of the 36 processes is failing.  But some of the processes take at least 8 minutes each to run.  That’s 8 minutes of staring at a screen watching stuff fly by that is nonsense.  Ugh.  The ONLY consolation in all of this is that my tuition will be reduced (albeit slightly).  But the reduction is better than nothing.

In the meantime, I thought I would tell you a story about my grandmother.  Meme had a stroke about 15 years ago that left her with the inability to quickly recall what things are called.  Example - she knows what a fork is, how to use it and where it is stored, but she might not remember what it is called – at least not quickly.  This, as you can guess, has led to some very interesting conversations because sometimes she’ll substitute a word that has no relation to the one she is trying to say.

One evening my Mom, Dad, Meme and I were sitting at the table for dinner.  I used to have a cat named Fergus, a black, male, tom cat that was really smart.  As we were finishing up dinner Meme said, “I think I’m going to go outside and *rape* the cat.”  (Now, for the record, she actually said “rake”, but my mom and I heard “rape”.)

The three of us (Mom, Dad and I) sort of pause and look at each other a little strangely.  So I said, “Um, Meme, I don’t think he’ll like that very much.”

To which she said, “Oh, he loves to be raked.”  (We were relieved at this point that she clarified “rake” instead of “rape”, but “raking the cat” still didn’t seem like a good idea to me.)  The three of us still had a slightly quizzical and dumbfounded look on our face, but Meme was unaware of any discrepancy in what she had just said.

Still not convinced that we were understanding her properly, one of us said something like, “so, when was the last time you raked the cat?” to which Meme said, “oh, I do it all the time.”

About a minute later she opened the back door, Fergus followed her out, she picked up his hairbrush and proceeded to brush him.  She was right about one thing: Fergus loved to be brushed!

My process is about to finish, so I gotta run.  Toodles!

    my niece…take a look

(hmm…two posts in one day…I hope this isn’t a trend!)  My niece had 2 surgical procedures done on her last Friday.  Firstly, the removed her tonsils and adenoids.  The doctor that did this surgery said that her tonsils were the largest he had ever removed!  So I guess it is good they removed them.  But they also did reconstructive surgery on her ears because she was born without that little fold in the ear that allows them to snuggle up to your head – which would mean that her ears would poke straight out, and that wouldn’t be good.

My sister said that she was doing so well on Sunday, being such a big girl, that they took her to Toys-R-Us and let her pick out anything she wanted.  Here’s what she got:  a lovely, blue, Princess gown.

Now, don’t those head bandages remind you of this fashion design of long ago?

I don’t know…maybe this fashion statement will make a come back?

    JULIE got MARRIED!

My former roommate, Julie, got married on Saturday!  Yippee!  It was a lovely, mid-morning wedding and I don’t think she could have asked for a better day.  It was warm and didn’t start to rain until early afternoon making it a perfect day for pictures.  Congratulations, Julie and Jason!

I also got to meet my new cousin, Sydney, on Saturday.  I spent a lovely afternoon with Lloyd and Arlana, both their mothers, and the family of Lloyd’s best friend.  Baby Sydney is very adorable.  She has Arlana’s eyes, she is tiny and has very long toes and fingers.  Lloyd is going to have a little “looker” on his hands, I just hope he is prepared!  Here is a picture from their Flickr photos:

    There she is…cute, eh?

Finally, here is the obligatory post for Logos today…(can you tell I want to win?)

The Vortex seems to have passed by me today, just hope that it stays away.  At least mine was not self-inflicted, unlike Chip’s vortex which is totally self-inflicted.  I can’t feel sorry about that one..(sorry, Chip).  I even remembered to call my Mom and WISH HER A HAPPY BIRTHDAY!, but it never hurts to say it again.  (I just hope she reads this.)  She reminded me that Olivia, my niece, is going to have surgery on Friday.  She is firstly going to have her adenoids and tonsils out but then she is going to have plastic surgery on her ears.  She had the unfortunate misfortune to be born with ears that she will not grow out of.  Big ears seem to run in my family.  In fact, my Mom had a complex about myears once-upon-a-time and actually explored the surgery option for me, but I ended up growing into them, which was good.  Olivia won’t grow into hers, however, so Kristin is going to have all the surgery stuff done in one day.  Poor girl: her ears, nose and throat are all going to hurt.  (At least I think her nose is going to hurt – I don’t actually know where the “adenoids” are, but I’m assuming that they have something to do with the nose.  Have no basis for this thought, however, and so I could likely be wrong.)

In the knitting news, I knit three more rows on the socks.  I’m thinking I should finish these wool socks by the time it warms up.  Oh – wait….maybe…just maybe the weather is waiting to change until I finish the socks and have a chance to wear them….yeah..now it makes sense!  I’m so sorry, people, that I have changed the normal weather patterns around whether or not my socks are done.  I’ll hurry it  up and finish them soon so that SPRING can actually start.  Better stop writing and start knitting.

Here is the shout out for Logos:

    monday’s vortex

I knew as soon as I awoke this morning that today was going to be strange.  First, the electricity went off last night so I had to get up at around 1:30 AM and reset my clock and I forgot to reset the alarm.  Which is okay ’cause I always wake up early.  Then I forgot to put conditioner it my hair and I stood there for a full minute trying to remember the shower sequence: shampoo, rinse, conditioner, rinse, soap, rinse, wrap hair, dry off, get out of shower.  As you can imagine, forgetting step 3 does not bode well for steps 4-9.  Then in an effort of attempting to make life easy, I placed my LFC ID card in the very front pocket of my purse, so that all I would have to do is hold it up to get into the building.  Except that when I held up my purse there was nothing.  No *beep* and no unlocking of doors.  Sensing that this was probably a left over from the power outage I manually unlocked the door and opened it.  And the siren went off.  Apparently it was working.  So I scrounged through my purse and guess what?  I had attempted to open the door with my Trinity ID and not my LFC ID.  No Wonder!

So then things are going merily along and I decided to pull out my laptop so that I can help my Dad do some troubleshooting with his computer.  I installed the windows updates and when the computer rebooted…nothing.  Just a series of beeps.  After tinkering with it I took it to the Helpdesk dudes and Kevin informed me that it was an HP issue to which there was a solution.  So I called HP support.  Can I just say AAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!  First the guy wanted to charge me when I could plainly read on their webiste that this was a known problem and they had graciously extended the warranty and therefor should be FREE!  Then I had to sit though about an hour and a half of him walking me though an update that didn’t work just so he could tell me that I need to send my laptop in.  DUH!

Then, my boss was having some wierd Exchange07 issues with a student’s mailbox.  (Which of course is her issue and not mine, but since she sits across the hall I’m thinking that something was seeping from my office to hers,  shhh, please don’t tell her it was me).

And now…AND NOW…it is supposed to SNOW tonight.  When, oh when, will this day end and I can wake up and be in SPRING?

    *****UPDATED TO ADD THE FOLLOWING:
And finally, as I was saving this draft, the server on which my blog is hosted had a hiccup.  And I lost half the post.

    *****BACK TO THE REGULAR POST

So just to ensure that SOMETHING good will happen today, my bible software vendor (whom I would LOVE to work for someday, btw) posted a link that they are giving away books…and all I have to do is post a postback on my site.  So, just to annoy all of you, I will probably do a postback EVERY DAY until the contest has ended.  So here it goes:

    that time of year

I’m beginning to think that mid- to late-April is the time when my car decides it needs a checkup – and a costly one at that.  I was driving to meet a friend for dinner on Friday night when my car suddenly started to do this knocking sound.  It wasn’t rhythmic or regular; it was one simple “knock” and the a little while later it would do it again.  I got no sleep that night for fear that it was something that would end up totalling my car, and I have no money for a new one.  So I arrived at Midas an hour before they opened just so that I could be first in line.  It turned out to be something related to a ball bearing on the front passenger wheel – and it turned out that it was something that was reasonable in cost as well.  Hopefully this means that my car is good for another year.

So yesterday was spent sitting at Midas until the could figure out the problem, getting the news that it would take until mid-afternoon, deciding to rent a car and driving to Wheaton to return the books that I checked out last week.  I must say that it was a nice ride – the car that I rented.  It was a 2010 Toyota Corolla and man-o-man it was sweet.  It was quiet, smooth, had AC and radio (4 things that I don’t currently have in a car).  It was such a lovely day yesterday as well.  It was nearly 65 degrees yesterday and then…then…today happened.  It is cold and rainy.  Yuck.  I guess its just that time of year.

It has been 11 days since I turned the dreaded _0 and I must say it feels very, very strange.  The strangeness comes with the fact that I can say that I am _0 and yet I still “feel” like I am 32.  Seriously.  I was 32 when I moved here and I really don’t feel that much “older” than I did back then.  Strange.  I have to say, though, that it is fun watching people’s faces drop when they don’t know how old I am, think that I’m 32 and I tell them that I’m actually _0.  That is wicked fun, I must say.

One thing that have me hope yesterday came from my friend Jane over at “Keep Going You Fool“.  She posted a link to a YouTube video of Susan Boyle who appeared on a TV show called Brittan’s Got Talent, hosted by Simon Cowell.  (You can find it here.)  This is a great lesson of first impressions and how they are not accurate.  The video has been watched over 12 million times and at last count there were over 60 thousand comments left.  Hoax or not, her performance was absolutely stunning.  The thing that gives me hope, though, was the fact that she said she was 47 and is just now having the opportunity to make something of her voice.   This gives me hope for all the things I still dream of accomplishing.  Like publishing a novel and writing a bible study.  Dreams can come true at any age.

Updated: I’m going to call my Grandmother tonight.  Just thought I’d let you all know.  I’m going to keep one of my “resolutions”, aka TFR’s (Turning Forty Resolutions).

    peace of mind

Good news…I finally finished my last paper for this class (YIPEE) and I got a good nights sleep.  There is something to be said about having the relief of finishing a project the night before it is due and a sound nights sleep.  I also woke up this morning and had the opportunity to read the last climatic chapter of the book that put me to sleep last night and so now I can function today knowing that I know the ending.

One new piece of news is that my former roommate, Julie, who is getting married a week from Saturday, asked me to do a reading in her wedding.  That was a nice surprise!  I think I’m going to have fun at this wedding (not that I don’t usually have fun at weddings…) and I’ll get to spend the night at M & L’s house and see Bug.  Bonus!  Plus, I’ll probably go to Plainfield after the wedding and meet my new cousin, Sydney.  Double bonus!  So it looks like Saturday, April 25 is going to be a good and busy day.

One last piece of advice today: DON’T FORGET TO MAIL YOUR TAXES!  THE POST OFFICES WON’T STAY OPEN LATE TONIGHT, SO MAKE SURE YOU GET IT THERE IN TIME FOR THEM TO STAMP IT AS “IN”.

    Toodles!

Well, it didn’t take me long to blow it.  Nearly as soon as I put down the resolutions they became broken.  Just like those blasted New Years’ resolutions.  Now I remember (at least I can still remember things) why I no longer make new years resolutions.  Hopefully, though, life will start to become a little more “normalized” soon.  I have my final paper due tomorrow and a final on May 13, which should be easy enough to study for.  Then, I am all about finding a condo to purchase!  Yipee!  Exciting summer for me!

I’ve contintued on my socks and about about 2 inches away from finishing.  Now that the weather is getting warmer and there is no need for socks.  Oh well, at least I’ll have them for next fall.  When I finish these I will try to quickly finish the baby blanket for Gabby.  It should be a quick knit, but you never know with me.  The one challenge will be the 4th skein of “different” yarn that I purchased.  I originally bought the same yarn in 3 colorways and then decided that I needed a 4th colorway…but I was no where near the LYS where I purchased the original three.  Bad decision in that the 4th type of yarn is very inflexible.  I’ll be driving past this LYS on Saturday on my way to Wheaton College to return some books….Kate….Long Grove is calling you…..Kate…can’t you hear your name? (Total bribery…I am so not above it!)

Plus, the other bonus is that tomorrow (hopefully) I will get my new laptop.  (Yes Mom and Dad, I purchased a new laptop.)  It is a netbook, i.e. a very small laptop.  The screen is only 9 inches in diameter.  The whole thing is only 9 inches wide, just under 7 inches deep and about 1.5 inches tall.  Pretty darn cute if you ask me.  This was purchased in the hopes that it can help me achieve one of my “Turning 40′s Resolutions” (aka, the TFR’s) of writing more.  We’ll see how it all pans out.  I plan on taking it to Louisiana at the end of May.  Hopefully the compact size will make it much easier for the travel…

Oh, well it looks as if I just received a package…of a book that I had pre-ordered.  Gotta go and check it out.  Toodles!

    its a new decade

So the “big day” has come and gone and other than knowing how old I really am, I don’t feel any different.  Not that I expected to, but you know, it is nice anyway to feel the same.  Someone asked me at my bash what my goals were for this austere year for me and my reply was to seriously consider purchasing a home.  Not a bad goal.  Here are some other goals:

    1. Finish my first pair of socks.  They are about 2 inches from being done, so this shouldn’t be difficult.
    2. Finish my first pair of mittens.  I’m stuck on the thumb, so once my brain gets past that problem, these should be easy enough to finish as well.
    3. Do some writing.  I should probably have a more specific goal than that – like say, write the first half of a novel, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself.
    4. Knit a shawl for my sister.
    5. Knit a sweater for my niece Olivia.
    6. Finish the baby blanker for my niece Gabby.

All this while – working full time, finishing up a class, leading a bible study and putting time and energy into purchasing a home (and moving).  Still do-able in a year’s time, dontcha think?

    Some resolutions:

RESOLVED: to spend at least 10 minutes every day writing.
RESOLVED: to call my grandmother at least once a week.
RESOLVED: to call my sister at least once a week.
RESOLVED: to improve in my correspondence – primarily sending “thank you” notes and notes of encouragement.
RESOLVED: to make a trip to California at least every 2 years (to visit my Aunt).
RESOLVED: to tell the people that are important to me how much I appreciate them.
